Livestock and Disasters

From 2009 until August 2018, Vetwork supported and coordinated the training and awareness raising for Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS). LEGS is now an independent Charitable Incorporated Organisation which coordinates and manages LEGS activities. The LEGS Website shows the latest thinking on how disasters affect livestock and how to respond to such emergencies.

There is growing interest in and political support for helping communities build their resilience to disasters, particularly drought. Livestock play a crucial role in building resilience as they are often the social and financial assets that the poor draw upon in times of stress. To effectively build resilience humanitarian or emergency response initiatives must be closely coordinated with development efforts and vice versa. To find out more on their thinking and resource documentation around resilience, livestock and drought see the Global Alliance for Action for Drought Resilience & Growth.
